Staff of Russian fleet in Crimea attacked with drone

According to Russian sources. Governor of Sevastopol: five injured.

In the Crimean Peninsula on Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia (original report misleading so text changed), the Black Sea Fleet staff has been attacked by a drone in the City of Sevastopol, according to Russian reports. Five people were injured on Sunday, Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvoshev said on his blog on the Telegram news channel. The drone hit a courtyard of the staff headquarters. Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014.

"Early this morning, Ukrainian nationalists decided to spoil our Navy Day," Razvoshaev wrote. Celebrations of the day, which is celebrated in many regions in Russia, were cancelled for Sevastopol. Russian authorities in regions bordering Ukraine have repeatedly complained of attacks from the neighbouring country (see above note!)

According to preliminary findings, the object of the attack was a drone, Rasvosheyev said. The injured are members of the staff of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. There were no casualties. "I ask that you remain calm and, if possible, stay at home," Razvoshaev wrote. He added that the FSB domestic intelligence service was working to investigate the case.

Russian President Vladimir Putin holds a parade of warships, aircraft and thousands of soldiers to mark "Navy Day" in St Petersburg on Sunday. The Kremlin leader is also using the traditional event as a show of force a good five months after the start of Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine. Parades honouring the naval forces with their various fleets are planned in several regions of Russia.

Forty warships, including submarines, are to take part. In the Mediterranean, Russia is also planning a naval parade in the port of the Syrian city of Tartus, according to Kremlin sources. Russia is on the side of President Bashar al-Assad in the war in Syria.
